Face: Obverse: The obverse is an homage to the virtue of Peace. Pax (Latin word for peace) is allegorically represented as a young Native American woman of the Lakota Nation. The woman performs a hoop dance while wearing ceremonial regalia that is traditionally handmade and embroidered with symbols representing the wearer's name, tribe, heritage, family legends, and personal achievements. A banner below bears the inscription "ALLIANCE OF FRIENDS," which is the modernized evolution of "The Friendly Ones," the meaning of the word "Lakota" in the native language. The Lakota woman is accompanied by an American bison and a bald eagle, the national animal and bird of the United States, along with a coyote and an American pasque blossom, the official South Dakota state animal and flower.
