Goldbacks are a voluntary form of currency that contains .9999 pure gold. Layers of gold are placed between two polyester sheets to create a photo-realistic, colorized design, containing actual gold. Utah was the first state to release Goldbacks and accept them as currency, based on the discretion of the vendor. Nevada, New Hampshire, Wyoming, and South Dakota have since followed as of 2023. Each state has 5 unique Goldback designs with denominations such as 1, 5, 10, 25, and 50.
